Data Sources
Data Sources for Gairaigo.Jepang.org
Gairaigo.Jepang.org is built from open data that we curate, filter, and explain for learners. This page explains the main sources we use, what each source contributes, and the limits readers should understand when using an entry.
1. JMdict (EDRDG)
JMdict from the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group is the main lexical foundation for many Japanese entries. From this source, we use information such as written forms, readings, parts of speech, and relevant basic meanings.
We do not present JMdict as a raw copy. The data is selected for the gairaigo scope, then enriched with categories, formation types, English and localized explanations, and usage notes that are easier for general visitors to read.
2. Internal Examples
Some example sentences are prepared and reviewed as learning aids to show how a word can appear in simple context. These examples are marked as internal sources so readers know they are not quoted from a dictionary or external corpus.
Some examples may include furigana or readings generated with PyKakasi. These readings are learning aids; they are not the source we use to decide a word’s meaning or origin, and they may still need correction.
Internal examples help with understanding, but they are not evidence that a phrase appeared in a specific outside source. If an example feels stiff, inaccurate, or worth improving, you can report it through the Corrections page.
3. External Examples
External examples are shown only when they are available as prebuilt data. Source, owner, and license details are shown when stored with the example.
External-source content can have limitations. Readers should treat it as learning support, not as the sole evidence for a word.
4. Attribution Limits
Source attribution helps readers distinguish lexical data, internal examples, and third-party examples. A source name does not mean every explanation on the page comes directly from that source.
The explanations, categories, layout, and supporting text on Gairaigo.Jepang.org are written for learning. For academic or professional decisions, please verify with appropriate dictionaries and reference sources.
